OnLine Africa CyberAc@demy for Multimedia Production Skills Training and Development ®™ was begun in 1998 to ensure a supply of highly qualified indigenous communicators who are capable of assisting others in telling their own stories in traditional and new media environments. In 2012, this program was expanded and is now offered as part of the Pan African Institute for Digital Media.

Our training aims to serve increasingly-demanding image consumers who wish to acquire quality photos, films and videos produced from non-western points of view. We have developed a wide array of web-assisted and on-line course modules for teaching photography, visual literacy, writing, graphic design, photojournalism, picture editing and multimedia lighting.

In partnership with the African Virtual University, UNESCO, Open University of Tanzania and other African and US universities, we are developing text and visual content for Africa’s first on-line university credit courses in visual communications, photography, graphics and photojournalism.

The virtual textbooks used for these courses were cited as Best Practices at the 2011 e-Learning Africa conference following testing at several universities in the US, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. These materials have also been used to train more than 200 working journalists, photographers and designers in the Union of African Journalists Young Journalist Training Programme.

Recently work was begun on field guides for mobile camera-phone users who want to overcome the qualitative limitations of such devices made by Nokia, Samsung and Microsoft. The “Apple of My Eye” manual is an interactive photography and video learning experience we created for users of Apple’s iPhone in the Western world. However, the African platforms of choice seem to be Android based. Therefore, new field manuals are under development for those users as well.
